Hey there SpokesWomen Fans!
We've had some exciting things happening with the SpokesWomen team over the last month--TEAM CAMP! The last weekend in February, 17+ women arrived in Chapel Hill, NC for a weekend of getting to know each other, great rides, and quality time with our sponsors at Performance Bikes. In a nutshell, it was fantastic!
Luckily, Old Man Winter decided to lift his cloak of weird and disruptive weather (snow and torrential rain!) for the weekend, blessing us with sunny skies and crisp temps for our time together. I'd never been to the Chapel Hill area, so our first team ride on Saturday morning was a wonderful treat for me coming from the Atlanta metro area. Nice roads--some with bike lanes, most with at least a fair shoulder--were punctuated by nicely rolling hills and beautiful scenery. Coupled with conversations with my new teammates, it was an absolutely wonderful ride!
There was one thing that was a little out of the ordinary about this ride though--having to peel down to our Performance cycling kit from most of our heavy winter riding gear for an action photo shoot for the Performance Bikes Spring catalog. (note: the "Hot Pants" embrocation cream from The Sweet Project saved me!) "Look fast. Look tough" was the direction from the lead photographer. Well, let me tell you, we rocked it! So, if you don't already receive the Performance Catalog, you may want to visit their website to take advantage of some of their sweet sales right now (Bike Blast!!) and to sign up for mailings. If we did indeed look fast and tough enough, perhaps you can see the team in print!
On Sunday, we joined the very active cycling community in Chapel Hill and surrounding cities for a great ride to benefit the victims of the Haiti earthquakes. It was another beautiful day of cycling for a great cause! And then, we had the best possible close to the day by attending a positively blissful Yoga for Athletes workshop, hosted by Sage Rountree. She understood what we'd put our bodies through over the weekend (and the last few months!) and had the perfect stretch for every tight muscle! Namaste Sage!
As I've gotten to know my Performance teammies through our camp and other rides together, the amount of purpose, drive, and enthusiasm of every woman on the team continues to inspire me.
We're women who are looking to make a name for ourselves both on and off the bike as medical doctors, professional researchers (science, health and others), full-time students, a professional triathlete, business professionals of all stripes, and numerous other careers.
We've got women in a broad spectrum of personal relationships from married to single, kids to kid-free, and our experience levels on the bike range from seasoned racers to new to cycling. I admit with pride that we are every woman you know.
What's been great in getting to know the team are the wonderful personal stories about how we got into cycling, why we continue to commit ourselves to the sport, and how we juggle all the things in life that are important to us. But, for all the things that make us unique, our passion for cycling is common and connects us. I hope that you enjoy getting to know us--and our stories--throughout the season.
See you on the road!
